This is my painting that is on the ceiling in the art room of my high school. Unfortunately the picture cuts of the top of the painting slightly, I’m sorry, that’s my fault. But hey, I’m an artist, not a photographer.
Actually, to the left of my picture is part of another ceiling tile I did last year that had Samus from Metroid and Link from Zelda on it. But I don’t like that one enough to put it up on here, so.

Oh, the horror.

I love horror movies as some of you may well know. But I have recently come to realize that I have a favorite subgenre within the horrorĀ scene —creature features.

Most likely due to the fact that I have been listening to Blaster the Rocket Man so much lately, haha. Zombies have become overatted, and it’s hard to find a good zombie movie that doesn’t involve George Romero (since he is really the father of the modern day zombie.) Alien movies are great if done right. Cowboys and Aliens, The Fourth Kind, District 9; all excellent movies. The only thing with this is that it seems like everyone thinks they can make a good alien movie. So the alien subgenre is flooded with more lame movies than good ones. And serial killer/slasher movies have never held my interest.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not giving up on alien or zombie movies, not at all.

But I love science fiction. All the books I read areĀ science fiction. Adding horror into the twist is probably the greatest idea ever. And this brings us to the creature feature.

An unknown enemy, something so horrible you turn your head, shield your eyes. Maybe it is from outerspace? Maybe it is just a lab experiment gone wrong? Whatever the case, it’s coming for you. And it wants you dead.

I think that mankind has a growing interest for the unknown. And I feel like the creature feature brings this out in us. There is fear there, but at the same time, there is a growing curiosity. What is this thing? Where did it come from?

If done right, the creature feature can bring something out in a human. If the film is done well, it can spark up true curiosity in the viewer.
